University Avenue to become two-way street

UPDATED: July 3, 2012, 1:07 p.m. EST

University Avenue will become a two-way street today, after months of construction to remodel the street as part of the first phase of the Connective Corridor project.

Previously, only southbound traffic was permitted on University Avenue between Erie Boulevard East and Waverly Avenue, but the street will now permit northbound travel as well. The conversion follows the recent addition of bike lanes on the street.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner advised motorists of the expected traffic change in a press release issued today.

Department of Public Works Commissioner Pete O’Connor told The Post-Standard that workers would be out early Tuesday morning to paint a stripe down the center of the street, to remove one-way signs and the bags that until recently covered two-way traffic signs.

Pink bus stop benches were installed as well, and a new parking lot has been opened.

The conversion was originally planned to be completed in mid-November of 2011, according to an Aug. 28 article from The Daily Orange.
