A Solvay man who was arrested in connection to a fire set on the porch of a Syracuse University student’s home in June 2013 has been sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge.

Grigoriy Bagiryan, 21, of 233 Charles Ave., who was initially charged with arson, pleaded guilty Oct. 1 to the reduced misdemeanor offense of criminal mischief. The felony reckless endangerment charge he was facing was also dismissed. He was sentenced on Oct. 7 before City Court Judge Stephen Dougherty, according to the certificate of disposition in the case.

The terms of the conditional discharge — which means a person convicted of a crime is released without being put in jail or on probation — were not immediately clear. Neither Bagiryan nor his attorney, Ralph Cognetti, returned a call on Tuesday afternoon about the case.

Syracuse police said on June 15, 2013, an SU student was walking back to his home on Ackerman Avenue near Euclid Avenue with friends when three men tried to follow them inside.

When the student did not let them in, police said, the men threw bottles at house. One man then threw a lit gas can onto the porch on the second floor of the home, which started a small fire.

It is unclear whether more arrests were later made in the case. Sgt. Gary Bulinski, a police spokesman, did not immediately return an email on Tuesday.
