A 15-year-old male was shot and killed during a shooting in Syracuse on Wednesday night that led to a search for the suspects in Oakwood Cemetery near Syracuse University, locking down campus for about two hours.

The homicide happened around 7:20 p.m. at 148 Hope Ave., police said, and a 17-year-old was also shot. The 17-year-old, who was shot in the leg, was transported to Upstate University Hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to a Syracuse Police Department release. The 15-year-old was found on the rear porch of the house on Hope Avenue, according to the release. Police have not released the names of the victims.

Witnesses told SPD that the gunshots were fired from a vehicle at the victims while they were on the porch, according to the release.

After hearing shots fired in the Hope Avenue area, a Syracuse police officer in an unmarked police vehicle followed what he thought was the suspect vehicle, according to the release. The suspects in the vehicle fired shots at the officers on Moore Avenue before exiting the vehicle and fleeing into Oakwood Cemetery onto Comstock Avenue near the SU campus.

SU was put on lockdown around 8:30 p.m. as police searched Oakwood Cemetery for the suspects. Sources told The Daily Orange that while police were searching for the suspects, students in buildings close to Oakwood Cemetery, such as Flint Hall, were told to turn their lights off and stay away from the windows. Centennial Hall on the SUNY-ESF campus was also put on lockdown.

Police from different agencies, including SPD, the SU Department of Public Safety and the New York State Police, searched the cemetery but did not find the suspects, who they suspected to be armed, sources told The D.O.

The lockdown on the SU campus was lifted around 10:30 p.m. Lt. Eric Carr of the Syracuse Police Department told The D.O. around 11:05 p.m. that police believe the suspects are no longer in the area around the SU campus.
