The Orange had fewer shots (18 to 11) and corner kicks (7-2), but tied the Huskies where it mattered most.

Nearly 75 minutes into regulation of Syracuse’s home opener against Connecticut, the Orange’s Alex Lamontagne rebounded her own missed shot and put it into the back of the net to break the seal. 1-0, SU.

Four minutes later, UConn’s Zoe Steck turned a pass from teammate Tanya Altrui into a response that knotted the game until the end of the regulation.

Two overtimes failed to find a winner on Monday night at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium, and the Orange (1-0-1) tied the Huskies (0-0-1), 1-1. It was an inching improvement for SU which, the last time it played UConn in 2015, fell 1-0.

In overtime, SU’s Sydney Brackett was the only member of the Syracuse team to get a shot on goal, but her efforts were thwarted by UConn goalie Mollie Kerrigan. SU fended off a UConn onslaught. In overtime, Connecticut had six shots and three corner kicks.

It mirrored regulation, when Connecticut led SU in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (4-2).  The Orange’s goalie, Courtney Brosnan, finished with nine saves.

On Thursday, Syracuse will travel to West Point, New York, for a 7 p.m. start against Army.
