The release of the map comes after students at a Feb. 18 forum called on DPS to increase transparency about its jurisdiction.

Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety released a map on Sunday detailing its law enforcement jurisdiction.

The map comes after students and SA leaders said there was a lack of transparency about DPS’ jurisdiction at a public forum held in response to the Feb. 9 assault of three students along Ackerman Avenue. SA later condemned SU for not publicly referring to the assault as racially motivated.

DPS can exercise law enforcement only while on duty and inside their area of jurisdiction, according to their website. This includes the SU campus and properties that are owned, controlled or administered by SU, per the website.

The map details the area surrounding SU’s main campus, South Campus and Drumlins Country Club, which are all owned by the university.

The Syracuse Police Department also has jurisdiction for all of SU’s property, per the website. DPS is authorized to provide law enforcement when agencies request assistance in Onondaga County. Outside of their areas of jurisdiction, DPS officers can arrest individuals for felonies in their presence, per the website.
