Syracuse moved up three spots in Inside Lacrosse’s first weekly rankings update of the season. The Orange (1-0) now sit at No. 9 after a 28-5 blowout win over Holy Cross on Saturday.

In Syracuse’s victory over Holy Cross, Owen Seebold, Brendan Curry and Tucker Dordevic all managed six-point performances. The Orange had 13 different goalscorers and notched 16 assists on their 28 goals. Starting faceoff specialist Jakob Phaup went 15-of-18 from X before he was replaced by backup Jack Savage. SU’s 28 goals are the most in a Division I game this season, thus far.

The victory marked the first of the Gary Gait era. The new SU men’s head coach took over the program after John Desko announced his retirement in June.

The weekly IL poll also saw a new No. 1 after Maryland beat then-No. 8 Loyola 20-8. Last week’s No. 1 team, defending champions Virginia, managed just an 11-10 victory over High Point.

The No. 1 Terps visit the Carrier Dome on Feb. 20 at noon for a highly anticipated matchup and the first true test of Syracuse’s season. Maryland (2-0) won its season-opener against High Point 21-13.

The Orange have a difficult schedule ahead, playing at No. 2 Virginia on Feb. 26 and then against No. 10 Army on March 2, rounding out three straight games against teams currently in the top 10.
