Syracuse led 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning against Tarleton State, trying to close out a 2-0 day and looking at a potential 7-0 start, which would have been the best in program history. But with one out and the bases empty, Brittany Coe blasted a home run to left center field to tie the game. The Texans sent Miranda Pruitt out to pinch hit as the next batter.

Pruitt hit a solo home run to right field to give the Texans a walk-off win. Within the span of two batters, the Orange spiraled from victory to defeat.

Earlier in the day at the Tarleton softball invitational, Syracuse (6-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-1 to move to 6-0 but lost to the Texans in its second game of the day on Friday. The Orange went 5-0 at the Best on the Bayou classic from Feb. 11-13.

In the Orange’s first game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, freshman Summer Clark (4-0) turned in another strong pitching performance in her first career complete game. She allowed just one run on five hits and one walk. Clark fanned nine Islanders, including four in the first inning.

Syracuse scored first in the bottom of the second when Rebecca Clyde singled in Carli Campbell. That hit broke a streak of eight hitless plate appearances for Clyde.

The Orange added onto their advantage in the third inning with two more runs. Neli Casares-Maher, a 2021 second-team All-ACC shortstop, started the inning with a single to center. Freshman Tessa Galipeau scored her with an RBI double, her eighth hit in six games. Galipeau continued her hot start, reaching base two times in three appearances. At the Best on the Bayou classic, she totaled seven hits and seven runs between five starts.

With Galipeau on second, Kelly Breen and Angel Jasso ripped back-to-back singles to load the bases. Taylor Posner hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Galipeau, but Breen was thrown out trying to advance to third.

Syracuse knocked out Islander starter Megan Depew (2-3) after three innings. Depew allowed three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three.

On the other hand, Clark did not allow a hit for four innings. The Islanders finally scored in the sixth inning when Pal Egan hit a one-out double and Sydney Hoyt hit a pinch-hit single to score Egan and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Corpus Christi threatened SU in the top of the seventh but couldn’t score. With a runner on first base and one out, Grace Gilbert tried to stretch a single into a double and was thrown out.

The Orange could not find the same offensive success against Tarleton State. Syracuse managed just a pair of singles (both by Campbell) and three walks against Tristan Bridges’ pitching. Bridges only struck out three Syracuse batters but induced 11 groundouts.

Syracuse’s only run of the night was a two-out unearned run. With Jude Padilla on first and Campbell on second, Clyde reached on an error by the third baseman. Campbell scored to give the Orange a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Orange then had runners on second and third, but Bridges forced a groundout to end the inning.

The Texans scattered seven total hits off Lindsey Hendrix and Ariana Adams (1-1) but didn’t land two runners on base at the same time until the sixth inning. Tarleton State had runners at the corners with two outs, but Georgia Capell lined out to left field to end the threat.
