Delaney Sweitzer was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week after notching a combined 13 saves against No. 9 Loyola and No. 15 Duke. This is the second straight week Sweitzer has won the award and the third time this season.
Three of Sweitzer’s eight saves against Loyola came in the fourth quarter, when the Orange took a late lead. That was the first time Syracuse had trailed since Northwestern in the season opener, and Sweitzer stepped up, not allowing a single goal while SU scored three to win 9-7.
In the next game against Duke, she had five saves in a back-and-forth first half, but SU never let the Blue Devils pull ahead. This comes one week after she posted 23 combined saves against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, setting a career-high 15 against the Hokies.
In the latest NCAA Division I statistics, which doesn’t include the win over Duke, Sweitzer ranks second in save percentage, third in goals-against average and 10th in saves. She also ranks first in the nation in excess saves (17.53), per LacrosseReference.
