Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a bias incident report of antisemitic vandalism found in a Watson Hall bathroom, according to a DPS release from 2:33 p.m. Tuesday.

A resident advisor reported a small carving of a swastika on a soap dispenser in the bathroom on Sunday, Sept. 22, according to the release.

SU Facilities Services have since removed and replaced the dispenser. DPS officers canvassed Watson and inspected the rest of its bathrooms but did not find any further vandalism, the release said.

“I am deeply troubled that someone would deface University property with such a hateful symbol,” Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, said in the release. “This type of incident, while disgusting and abhorrent, is often difficult to investigate due to the location.”

As the incident occurred in a restroom, video footage or direct witness accounts are not available to DPS, Stone said in the release. The department will continue to investigate and attempt to identify the person responsible.
