No. 4 Syracuse (13-4, 4-2 Atlantic Coast) jumped back into the win column against No. 20 Cornell (10-3, 4-1 Ivy) on Tuesday evening with a 9-7 win on the road in Ithaca, New York.

The Orange neutralized a late Cornell run to move past its back-and-forth, 12-11 loss to No. 3 North Carolina.

In the first half, Syracuse jumped out to a 4-0 advantage with goals from two of its top scoring threats, Riley Donahue and Kayla Treanor. In the final nine minutes of the half though, the Big Red battled back. Cornell scored twice, including freshman midfielder Christie Raymond’s second goal of the season, to enter the break down only 5-2.

Despite having more shots (16 to 7) and a better clear percentage (6-of-8 to 4-of-8), Syracuse let Cornell stay in it.

It seemed at the beginning of the second half that Cornell was readying for a run to overtake the Orange, but SU’s midfield shut the door.

After Cornell’s Joey Coffy made it 5-3 less than two minutes into the frame, Orange midfielders Taylor Gait and Erica Bodt found the back of the net to put some more distance between the two teams.

Syracuse attack Nicole Levy piled on two more goals to seemingly put the game out of reach before the Big Red’s attempted comeback.

But the Orange snuffed out the run and got itself back in the win column, setting up a matchup with Louisville on Saturday in the Carrier Dome at noon.
