Syracuse University’s Student Association discussed shifting dining hall hours in two freshman dining halls during Monday night’s assembly meeting.

SA will conduct a survey to gauge student input about extending operation hours at Shaw and Brockway Dining Halls, which currently close at 7:30 p.m., SA President Ghufran Salih said after the meeting. The survey will also monitor foot traffic in the two dining halls.

“This is still in its early stages,” Salih said. “We kind of just hoped that it could be something that it could be implemented in the fall.”

Brockway and Shaw Dining Halls are open in three periods from 7 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and three staggered periods from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekends, according to SU’s food service website. All other freshman dining halls are openuntil 9 p.m.

Vice President Kyle Rosenblumsaid he heard from some students that they did not eat dinner or had to walk to other dining halls because of the earlier closing times.

Salih and Rosenblum said they are considering asking to move the hours of operation back either approximately 30 minutes or one hour.

SA has been in talks with SU administrators about the potential dining hall changes, Salih said.

Other business

SA is also in talks with Gotcha Bikes, a bike-sharing program, to create bike racks around campus, Rosenblum and Salih said during the meeting.

Syracuse’s Common Council approved a contract with Gotcha Bikes in July 2018. The program will start operating in April 2019, according to Syracuse.com.

The assembly also discussed amending the Campus Readership Program, which provides print copies of The New York Times and USA Today newspapers across campus. The potential change would give students digital subscriptions to the newspapers instead of hard copies being distributed throughout campus, Salih and Rosenblum said during the meeting.

The readership program is co-sponsored by SA and SU’s administration, Salih confirmed after the meeting.

Sophia Faram was re-elected to the Elections and Membership committee. Faram, who needed two-thirds of the assembly’s approval in the uncontested race, was reelected unanimously.
